Supporting Better Patient Care

Cancer care extends far beyond clinical treatment. Patients and caregivers often need practical, everyday support to manage nutrition, symptoms, and the challenges of treatment.

In this client story, Abby Kirk and Tiffany Reeves share how their organization partnered with CARAVAN to build a comprehensive oncology education experience, combining clinically reviewed content with an interactive meal planning tool to help patients take a more active role in their care while supporting better outcomes across the treatment journey.

1. What goals were you trying to achieve when you first started working with CARAVAN on this content?

Since we are offering a 360 support platform for oncology patients, we wanted content solutions to address the mental, physical, and nutritional challenges our users may experience. Additionally, we were coming off the experience of working with a previous vendor who produced the type of niche content we wanted, but the production quality was low and the communication was strained, so we were looking for more of a supportive partnership and one that offered high grade production.

2. What results did you see from the interactive meal planning tools specifically, and what impact did that have on your organization?

We wanted to provide a balance of both ‘passive’ and ‘active’ content – so that users could interact with some features and adapt it into their daily lives. Since the interactive meal planner has features that allow users to download shopping lists, incorporate existing household ingredients, and scale volume, it is such a useful tool for users and their caregivers. The meal planner consistently is highlighted with positive feedback from users.

3. How have the content and meal planner changed the way patients engage with their care, especially across clinical education and palliative care?

We expect the nutritional guidance and meal planner to reduce the amount of ED visits as it prevents dehydration and malnutrition, two common occurrences in cancer care. We believe in enablement through education, and providing these resources enables the patient to both understand the physical process of cancer treatment and participate in their own care in a more meaningful way.

4. How do you measure whether the tools are resonating with your patient population, especially across the languages you support?

Due to the limitations of our platform’s reporting analytics we cannot track how often users are engaging or returning to particular content, but anecdotally we receive feedback on our monthly check-ins with patients. Our Spanish and Chinese content is tailored to be plugged in specifically when onboarding patients requesting that language.

5. What was it like working with CARAVAN to build something this complex — interactive, compliant, clinically reviewed, multilingual, and white-labeled? What stood out about the partnership?

We were floored by the work ethic and commitment of the CARAVAN crew. Highlights include sorting our chosen recipes by the 4 top cancer diagnoses to address specific needs, selecting recipes for multiple meal options, offering multiple options for downloading and saving the ingredient lists, not to mention superb attention to white labeling and detail work with our required content display parameters. The level of precision and quick turnaround times have been so appreciated – it’s truly a partnership that doesn’t feel like we need to “manage” it.

6. Looking ahead, how do you see content and the interactive meal planning tool evolving to support OPN’s programs as patient needs and offerings grow?

We hope to incorporate more of the meal planner’s filtering capabilities as we begin to tailor programs to address specific needs by diagnosis. Additionally, our road map includes survivorship programs and community engagement and we plan to build bespoke content as needed to support these features.

Supporting oncology patients requires more than delivering information. It means providing accessible tools that help patients and caregivers make targeted decisions throughout treatment and beyond. This client story highlights how combining trusted educational content with interactive resources can strengthen patient engagement, improve the care experience, and create meaningful support across every stage of the oncology journey.
